The 80th Birthday Celebration of Monsignor Theophilus Anyanwu
The 80th birthday celebration of Monsignor Theophilus Anyanwu was a memorable and grace-filled event that brought together priests, seminarians, friends, and well-wishers to honour a man who has dedicated his entire life to the service of God and the formation of future priests. Although his actual birthday was on 1st May 2026, the grand celebration was held on 20th and 21st June 2026.
The celebration commenced on 20th June 2026 with a novelty football match between Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu, and St. Bernard Seminary Hostel, Nkatancha, Nike, Enugu. The match was played in an atmosphere of friendship, unity, and sportsmanship. Rather than focusing solely on competition, both teams played in the joyful spirit of celebrating the life and remarkable achievements of Monsignor Anyanwu. The event provided an opportunity for the seminarians to bond while honouring a priest who has devoted decades to their formation.

The grand climax of the celebration took place on 21st June 2026 with a solemn Holy Mass presided over by the Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Enugu. In his homily, the Bishop paid glowing tribute to Monsignor Anyanwu, describing him as a dedicated priest whose entire life has been spent in the service of God and humanity. He particularly praised his unwavering commitment to the formation of future priests, noting that the large number of priests present at the celebration was a living testimony to the countless lives Monsignor had touched throughout his years of priestly ministry.
The Auxiliary Bishop also shared a personal testimony, recalling that Monsignor Anyanwu had once served as his Rector at Queen of the Apostles Seminary, Imezi-Owa. He expressed deep gratitude for the spiritual and academic guidance he received under Monsignor's leadership, emphasizing that many priests today owe part of their formation to his fatherly care and dedication.

Reflecting on Monsignor's life, the Bishop remarked that, despite being the only son of his family, he generously offered his entire life to God's service. Even upon reaching retirement, Monsignor requested to remain in the seminary as a Spiritual Director, preferring to continue guiding and mentoring seminarians rather than seeking personal comfort elsewhere. This remarkable decision demonstrated his lifelong commitment to the Church and to the formation of future generations of priests.
A special highlight of the Eucharistic celebration was the administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation to four candidates, making the occasion even more spiritually significant.
During the celebration, Monsignor Anyanwu announced his personal donation of ₦150,000 towards the ongoing construction of the seminary chapel. In his characteristic humility, he requested that the amount be deducted from his monthly stipend. However, the priests present lovingly objected, insisting that his account should not be debited. Instead, they collectively contributed the same amount towards the chapel project in appreciation of his years of selfless service and generosity.
Monsignor also expressed a heartfelt wish that, after his earthly journey is complete, a Holy Mass should always be celebrated for him in the new chapel. This touching request reflected his deep love for the Eucharist, the seminary community, and the priestly vocation to which he had dedicated his life.
Following the Holy Mass, guests proceeded to a joyful reception where they shared meals, exchanged warm memories, and celebrated Monsignor's remarkable life and legacy. The atmosphere was filled with gratitude, happiness, and admiration for a priest whose life continues to inspire many. At the conclusion of the celebration, Monsignor Theophilus Anyanwu sincerely thanked everyone who had travelled from near and far to celebrate with him, expressing his appreciation for their love, prayers, and support.
Indeed, the celebration of Monsignor Theophilus Anyanwu's 80th birthday was not merely the marking of another year of life but a fitting tribute to eight decades of faithful service, humility, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to God, the Church, and the formation of countless priests.
